One Step Towards Glory

Two weeks before my tenth birthday, humanity took its first step on the moon.  As I gazed at its full face in the vast night sky, I took my first step toward the One who created both man and moon.  And though I had not been in a church since my infant baptism, I decided I wanted to meet my Maker—right then and there.

So, I saved my money and bought a New Testament—the only Bible that would be in our home for years.  Approaching it as I did all other books, I read the first part (Matthew), the last part (Revelation), then everything in between.  (I just have to know how stories end before I get too far in!)

There He was in Matthew!  Jesus—full of grace—unlike anyone I had ever known—the One who came to set us free from sin and death.  So this was the REAL reason for Easter—not bunnies and eggs and chocolate in baskets.

And there He was again in Revelation!  The Alpha and Omega—the Beginning and End—crucified—resurrected—coming again.  In Revelation, I saw past the cross of Good Friday—past the empty tomb of Easter morning—all the way to the end where He comes again in glory to reign upon the earth.  Jesus revealed in this last book that He is making everything new with no trace left of the death curse.

I was EXCITED to learn more about this Jesus, the Lamb of God!  So I got a full Bible—Old Testament and New—and studied a lot.  And I saw that Genesis connected to Revelation, more like a circle than a line.  The beginning and the end come together in the One who has no beginning and end!

By far, my favorite book of the Bible—to this day—is Revelation.  I have often wondered—in all the places I’ve lived—why so few pastors preach from this magnificent book.  Because Revelation is the biggest book of HOPE in the Bible!  Pardon me for this lame analogy from a football nut, but not knowing Revelation is like watching the Packers in the Super Bowl and turning off the TV in the last five minutes of the game!  Like, who in their right mind would DO such a thing?!

I get it.  There are wild images and numbers.  And there is violence and terror.  But somehow, God shielded me from all that and helped me see Christ resurrected—Christ as King—Christ coming back for His own—Christ renewing  ALL things—the lion laying down with the lamb!  Even as I type out these words, I’m so excited my hands are starting to tremble!  Talk about GOOD NEWS!  Talk about HOPE!  Talk about a future with a PLAN—a plan for the FUTURE!

The vision of Christ’s GLORY fills the book of Revelation!  How can we look upon our crucified Savior and not look all the way to the end to behold His GLORY?  And how can we be satisfied with thanking Him for saving us from sin and neglect to tell the WHOLE story of His GLORY?

He’s coming again and it’s not just for humanity.  He’s coming again for everything.  Because Revelation is about everything He has ever created being restored—renewed—perfected.

A new heaven and a NEW EARTH!  And God dwelling with us HERE where we will be His people and He will be our God.  He will wipe every tear from our eyes and there will be no more DEATH or MOURNING or CRYING or PAIN!  (Revelation 21:1)  This is our HOPE!

He who sits on the throne of Heaven says, “I am making everything new!  Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”  (Revelation 21:5)

He is our HOPE!

No more war.  No more sickness.  No more death.  No more sin.

Heaven on earth.  Literally.  Blessed HOPE!

Yes, the cross.

Yes, the grave.

Yes, the empty tomb.

Let us never forget.  Let us always give thanks.

And let us press on to the end—to His GLORY—for here is our hope.  He IS our hope.

If an unchurched, ten-year-old girl can grasp the main point of Revelation, can we all trust God to teach us what we most need to know—to help us see what we NEED to see?

A vision of His glory.

A vision of heaven on earth.

Here is the future of those who have had their sin-sullied robes washed clean by Christ’s redemptive blood.

Brothers and sisters!  We will meet in the New Jerusalem with Christ as King of the whole earth and we will eat—of—the—tree—of—life!  Remember that tree of knowledge of good and evil in the Garden of Eden?  Remember how we were banned by His grace from eating from the tree of life so that we wouldn’t live forever in a sinful state—in a fallen world?  Jesus paid the price of our disobedience.  He paid it in full on the cross.  He overcame the grave so that we who believe will ALL overcome the grave.

And He is making all things NEW.  All things.  And He’s coming back!

He promises us this.

And we can trust His promises—every single one of them—because—He is . . . .

The Living One  (Revelation 1:18)

Son of God  (Revelation 2:18)

Faithful and True  (Revelation 19:11)

The Word of God  (Revelation 19:14)

KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS  (Revelation 19:16)

Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End  (Revelation 21:6)

The Lamb  (Revelation 21:22)

The First and Last  (Revelation 22:13)

The Root and Offspring of David  (Revelation 22:16)

The bright Morning Star  (Revelation 22:16)

Let our voices ring loud and clear with the angels:

Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!  (Revelation 5:12)

And with every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, singing:

To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!  (Revelation 5:13)

Know the last words of Jesus in the Bible?

“Yes, I am coming soon.”  Revelation 22:20

Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

Catch the vision!

Take one step towards His glory.

Even a child’s step will do.
