Packs and The Lone Wolf—How to Deal with the Deadly, Including Ourselves

Electric races lightening fast through my nerves around 9:30 p.m. A pack of coyotes starts yipping and barking. They are close.  Very close.  Right on the edge of the densely wooded ravine next to our log home. My heart thumps hard in my chest. The eerie sounds of the pack grip me as I stand with Rose and Baker on our front lawn under the star-studded sky. If able, I know where dour dogs will

When You’re Scared and You Don’t Know What To Do

Since this weekend? Seems we’re consumed. In our nation . . . What he said. What he didn’t say. When he said it. Or didn’t say it. Why he took so long to say it. Is he fit? Is he unfit? Are we safe? Are we unsafe? Is the world safe? This opinion. That opinion. This criticism. That criticism. This defense. That attack. I’m weary of it all. I want to be an ostrich. Instead,

Fear Not—An Invitation to the Freedom of Dependence

The men in my life are laying out clothes, filling up containers, packing enough for five days of their ten away in two cities where terror has struck again—London and Paris.  And they’ll be standing on the beaches where some other mother’s boys landed and turned the waters red at the same ages as our sons—19 and 23.  They’re going to witness history and pay their respects. Will my husband and sons return? Our daughter

Encouragement for the Broken and Stigmatized

I stepped out of the shadows and declared—on Facebook—during Holy Week—that I was suffering with clinical depression. I had hit the hard floor of desperation on Wednesday before Maundy Thursday in the midst of a medication change, one of several I’d been through over the past twenty years. So why did I dare post and ask for help?  Because too many don’t.  People are suffering and dying all over the world from depression.  Consider the

What Happens When the Hurting Seek Help

He comes up to me and leans in close to my ear. Will you pray for me? Of course, I say as I look into his eyes starting to well with tears. He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a handkerchief, dabs both his eyes, and with trembling voice tells me straight . . . I don’t feel God’s love.   Instinctively, I reach out and wrap my arms around this silver-haired man in

UNRAVELING THE UNKNOWNS

He’s in critical condition with broken bones and a ripped up brain in an induced coma. He’s the 16 year-old brother of one of my former art students.  Our families attended the same church for a few years. Headed to school last Friday morning, he comes to a curve.  His car tumbles sideways—three times, I hear.  I see video of  his car being dragged out of the woods.  But he’s not out of the woods

How Can I Trust God?

She told me . . . I don’t know if I can trust God.  I’m afraid He’ll hurt me like I’ve been hurt before. This young woman, sitting in my office years ago, was one of many seeking therapy.  They had been hurt badly in relationship from their earliest memories on.  People who professed love often didn’t act very loving.  In fact, those who should be most trustworthy turned out to be see-saws of

Sacrificial Love and Letting Yourself Be Held By the Very Able Hand of God

Anne asked me.  Said she needed me to come. Her past few phone messages in my voicemail sounded different—not quite desperate but certainly bold in expressing her request. “I need to see you.” Five strong words. Does a new diagnosis of Alzheimer’s do this to a person?  When you’re 69?  Do you suddenly wonder how long you’ll have before your world closes in on you and you even forget those you hold most dear?  Do

For the Joy Set Before Us

Joy to the world!  The LORD has come!  Let Earth receive her King! JOY? Fact is, some are sad right now.  Like the loved ones of the twelve mowed down by ISIS in the Christmas market on Monday in Germany.  While we’re singing peace on Earth, some are creating chaos and spreading terror and grief. How do we have JOY when we grieve with our fellow brothers and sisters in a foreign country, knowing one

The Presence of Peace in the Midst of Grief

The second week of Advent, we light that second candle.  The peace candle. Peace. I want that flame to touch every wicked thing around the world this Christmas. I want peace on earth and goodwill to spread towards all.  This is what we sing this season, isn’t it?  Peace?  Goodwill? And yet, Aleppo’s without water and there are reports of civilian executions and it all’s so far away.  But there’s the “bombings” we don’t see

When You’ve Loved and Lost and You Need Another Miracle

MaryAnn Lammers smiled through her tears as Pastor gathered our attention during after-service coffee downstairs. “Today is MaryAnn’s 63rd wedding anniversary.” Only, MaryAnn’s love went to glory last year right before Christmas. Her heart still cries for her loss—63 years of walking as one and raising a house full of kids. When heart and soul are knit together by God, the grieving doesn’t end when the casket closes and the people go home and you sit

If You Need Some Love To Set You Free

I hired a prisoner yesterday. Well, actually, a former prisoner. Just out of the slammer. Spent two years behind bars and that wasn’t his first stint—in prison, that is. $150 to his name. Rent due September 1. No job yet but he’s hunting hard. Anyone want to hire a prisoner set free? Yeah, he’s made bad choices. Haven’t we all? Yeah, he’s suffering the consequences. Aren’t we all? Whether we have $150 in our pockets
