Abundance from Dependence

What do you do when your dreams aren’t coming true? What do you do when your heart breaks from the ache of wanting something so much and it looks like that one dream may never be yours?  Like Hannah who wanted a child.  Desperately. So what did Hannah do?  Instead of lashing out at her tormenter Peninnah, Hannah went straight to God with her lament and her request.  (1 Samuel 1:1-20) In short, Hannah poured

Foreign Affairs and What’s Right With the World

Terrorist attacks.  My two sons and my husband are heading to London and Paris in two weeks for a WWII trip . . . I pray.  I reflect . . . I put a poster board together for him Saturday, the day before he walked the aisle.  The day before he took his seat among the others whose last name begins with a “J”. I slipped a photograph out of a plastic sleeve—the first of

Over the Edge

Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Luke 12:6-7 Soon, I will watch the swallows nest in the barn, hatching naked in cups of twig and feather. Soon, fat bodies will crowd and I will wonder why they stay stuck when there’s a whole world to

What Has a Strong Hold on You?

How do you define “stronghold”? I used to think strongholds were just negative.  Because most strongholds tear down and destroy. There’s only one Stronghold who laid down His life for us so we can have True Life now and forever.  Jesus is the One-and-Only we can turn to, run to, cling to who will surely shelter us from all that would destroy us physically, emotionally, spiritually. If we turn to Jesus, He promised to be

When You’re Faced with The Unexpected, Expect Joy

Life consists of lists.  Surely, we can all list our stresses.  Surely, we can all list our joys. We can offer a litany of complaints.  We can offer our lips to give thanks. Our loving God invites us to cast all our cares onto Him, because He cares for us (1 Peter 5:7). Truth is, our good Lord told us we’d have trials and that in our trials He’s still good. But how do the

My Second Best Christmas Gift of All Time

Of course, the best Christmas gift of all time is Christ himself. On Christmas morning, I received my second best Christmas gift of all time. We’d been to church on Christmas Eve and seen and heard all the kids dressed up as Mary, Joseph, wise men, shepherds and a bunch of shaggy, smelly sheep.  We’d come home and brought all the gifts we’d bought or made for one another and arranged them beautifully under the

For the Joy Set Before Us

Joy to the world!  The LORD has come!  Let Earth receive her King! JOY? Fact is, some are sad right now.  Like the loved ones of the twelve mowed down by ISIS in the Christmas market on Monday in Germany.  While we’re singing peace on Earth, some are creating chaos and spreading terror and grief. How do we have JOY when we grieve with our fellow brothers and sisters in a foreign country, knowing one

The Presence of Peace in the Midst of Grief

The second week of Advent, we light that second candle.  The peace candle. Peace. I want that flame to touch every wicked thing around the world this Christmas. I want peace on earth and goodwill to spread towards all.  This is what we sing this season, isn’t it?  Peace?  Goodwill? And yet, Aleppo’s without water and there are reports of civilian executions and it all’s so far away.  But there’s the “bombings” we don’t see

When You’ve Loved and Lost and You Need Another Miracle

MaryAnn Lammers smiled through her tears as Pastor gathered our attention during after-service coffee downstairs. “Today is MaryAnn’s 63rd wedding anniversary.” Only, MaryAnn’s love went to glory last year right before Christmas. Her heart still cries for her loss—63 years of walking as one and raising a house full of kids. When heart and soul are knit together by God, the grieving doesn’t end when the casket closes and the people go home and you sit

How Can We Turn Away from Such a Great Love?

Leslie Leyland Fields  is a multi-faceted, precious jewel—brilliant, wise, accomplished,  humble, and generous. She has been part of her family’s Alaskan commercial salmon fishing operation for decades on the edge of a continent. For the past four years, she has welcomed writers to her Alaskan wilderness fish camp each summer, teaching how to create beauty with words and encouraging all.  She fillets wild salmon pulled from the surf each day and serves it to her guests as gift.  Mostly, I

When You Need Lasting Peace and Solid Hope

Which one should I choose? Back and forth I went on Sunday night, wondering. Who would get my vote?    Who would win?  Who would lose?  I was kind of beside myself with the choice set before me. I could choose only one! So, I chose to watch the debate instead of the Packers. Nearly killed me. For one, because I’m more than kind of a Packers fan. I’m one of those nuts who will

Crossing the Continent, Finding Faith

Crossing the Continent, Finding Faith

The beginning of this month, I flew to the edge of the continent. From one shore to another—Lake Michigan to Alaska.  Flew to Anchorage and then Kodiak Island. Boarded a bush plane, hugged the interior mountain peaks, landed on a gravel strip at Larsen Bay. Hauled my bag down to the black rocky beach. Climbed into one of two waiting skiffs with a group of writers. Motored seven miles through Uyak Bay, salted wind blowing
